About This Gallery
In October 2023, Rev. Dr. Wanda Lundy addressed members of the Union County Historical Society during their regular meeting, sharing the vision and impact behind the 313+ Ancestors Speak Project.
Her presentation, referenced in Issues 172 and 173 of the UCHS Newsletter, highlighted the historical significance of the 313+ enslaved and free African ancestors buried at the Old First Cemetery in Elizabeth, NJ.
That same year, a powerful monument was unveiled to honor their memory and reclaim their place in local and national history.
While photographs from the UCHS meeting are limited, this gallery features moments from the public unveiling of the monument—
a cornerstone of community remembrance and African American heritage in Union County.
